Diving For Pearls.
Diving For Pearls is an editorial piece in which inexplicably speaks about societal expectations on gender. Topics of gender norms in fashion surface and we are left to recognize the non traditional methods used in dressing the male form, more specifically youth. Diving For Pearls addresses the world of ambiguous fashion and gender fluidity creating an editorial in which draws connections between men’s fashion and youth demographics. By depicting a diverse and unique form of self expression for males, we begin to question society’s expectations on men and boys. Wearing skirts, wide legged trousers and silk scarves. Oversized blazers hide the male anatomy, colours, textures and silhouettes are incorporated to break the stereotypes of masculinity. We are left to question gender norms in fashion and society’s expectations of how we should look and act as a male individual. Physical objects and articles of clothing no longer reflect a gender identity, but a form of individuality. Men able to present themselves as feminine or masculine, or both. Limitations are not present, sharing qualities of masculinity and femininity is nothing new, but being comfortable in doing so is still a topic of discussion. Diving For Pearls explores masculinity and femininity hand in hand, sparks conversations of androgyny and the inclusion of differences in high fashion. Thriving to broaden ways of thinking, shedding light on the acceptance of new ways of self expression. Not about sexual orientation or preference, but the ways in which we chose to present ourselves to the world.
